How to save over €170,000: why your fund's fees mean EVERYTHING
When it comes to investing, the return is not the only thing that counts. Fees play a huge role. Small differences in annual fees can end up costing you a six-figure sum over time. Let's look at a concrete example and show why you should keep an eye on your fund's total annual cost: all of the fund's ongoing costs per year, as a percentage of your holding. You'll find it in the fund's factsheet, often listed as the ongoing charges, TER or expense ratio.
Two funds, two very different results
Imagine you invest €100,000 and let the money grow for 30 years at an average annual growth rate of 7%, but in two different funds:
Fund A: annual fees of 0.5%
After 30 years: €654,946
Fund B: annual fees of 1.5%
After 30 years: €483,727
The difference? A full €171,219, money that could have been yours if you had picked the fund with lower fees. You can play with the numbers yourself in our free calculator.
Why do fees make such a big difference?
The annual fees are taken out of your return every year, and over time the difference grows because of compound interest. That means a small difference in percent can quickly turn into a big difference in money.
